Building the AI platform Thomson Reuters bought for CoCounsel

Materia AI is a generative AI platform built for public accounting firms, designed to automate tedious workflows and supercharge staff productivity. We designed and built their entire digital presence—website, visual identity, and product storytelling—from stealth launch through a $6.3M seed round to acquisition by Thomson Reuters, where the technology now powers CoCounsel's agentic AI capabilities across 1 million+ professionals worldwide

The background

Materia AI was founded in 2022 by Kevin Merlini and Lucas Adams, former Facebook engineers who led product and engineering teams for news integrity and AI systems. Merlini’s career began as an auditor at KPMG, where he experienced firsthand the tedious, low-value work that dominates the accounting profession, sifting through unstructured data, manual cross-referencing, and repetitive compliance checks. He lasted four months before leaving to build a better way.

The timing was right. The United States was facing a deepening shortage of accounting professionals, 75% of CPAs set to retire in the next 15 years, new CPA candidates down 33%, and firms struggling to retain talent in a profession weighed down by drudgery. The co-founders incubated the idea at the Allen Institute for AI in late 2022, months before ChatGPT launched, and began building the first comprehensive generative AI platform purpose-built for public accounting firms.

By mid-2024, Materia emerged from stealth with $6.3 million in seed funding led by Spark Capital, with participation from Haystack Ventures, Thomson Reuters Ventures, Exponent Founders Capital, and the Allen Institute for AI. The platform was already serving five clients, including firms in the U.S. top 100, with some deploying Materia across their entire auditing teams.

The challenge

Materia had the technology and the market timing, but lacked the digital presence to match. The challenge was twofold: position a deeply technical AI product for a traditionally conservative audience, CPAs and accounting firm leadership, and create a brand experience that conveyed both innovation and trust.

Several compounding factors shaped the brief. The accounting industry is inherently skeptical of new technology; firms need to see compliance, security certifications, and authoritative content before they engage. Materia was competing for attention against a wave of generic AI startups flooding every professional vertical, and needed to stand apart without relying on hype. The product itself was complex, a knowledge hub, document workspace, conversational assistant, and workflow engine, all of which needed to be communicated clearly to non-technical decision makers. And the stakes were high: the website wasn’t just a marketing asset; it was the primary sales tool for closing enterprise deals with top-tier accounting firms.

Materia needed a digital presence that could do three things at once: establish instant credibility, explain a multi-layered product without overwhelming the audience, and convert high-intent visitors into demo requests.

The solution

Keeways partnered with Materia's founding team from the earliest stages to craft a digital experience that would carry the company from stealth to scale, and ultimately to acquisition.

01

We started with strategic positioning. Rather than leading with technology buzzwords, we anchored Materia’s narrative in the real pain of accountants: wasted hours on tedious tasks, information locked in silos, and a profession bleeding talent. This human-first framing resonated with firm partners and decision-makers far more than feature lists ever could. Every headline, every section, every scroll interaction was designed to answer one question: “How does this make my team’s life better?”

02

The visual language we developed for Materia combined a sleek, dark-themed interface with dynamic animations that mirrored the product’s intelligence. We used motion design to demonstrate the AI in action, showing how queries flow into answers, how documents get analyzed in real time, and how workflows chain together. The result felt premium and purposeful, avoiding the generic SaaS aesthetic that plagues most AI startups. Every animation had a job: build confidence in the technology by showing it working.

03

On the technical side, we built the entire site in Webflow, optimizing for speed, SEO performance, and conversion. We implemented a comprehensive SEO strategy that drove organic traffic from high-intent accounting professionals searching for AI solutions. The site architecture was designed around the buyer journey, awareness content at the top, deep product walkthroughs in the middle, and clear demo CTAs at every decision point. This wasn’t a brochure site; it was a conversion engine.

04

The results validated the approach. Within three months of launch, Materia saw a 171% increase in conversions. The platform secured clients from the top 100 accounting firms in the U.S., and the brand credibility we built became a direct factor in Thomson Reuters’ confidence during acquisition due diligence. When Thomson Reuters acquired Materia in October 2024, the technology was integrated into CoCounsel, their flagship AI assistant now serving over one million professionals across 107 countries. The platform we helped launch didn’t just grow a startup; it became the agentic AI foundation for one of the world’s largest professional services companies.

Results

The work we did with Materia traveled far beyond a website launch. It became the foundation for a brand that earned enterprise trust, closed institutional deals, and ultimately caught the eye of a global acquirer. From stealth to Thomson Reuters, every design decision compounded into outcomes that mattered.
