Launching the AI platform that redefined accounting — from stealth to $6.3M and acquisition

Materia is the first generative AI platform built specifically for public accounting firms, automating tedious workflows so teams can focus on high-value advisory work. We designed and built the complete digital experience — website, visual identity, motion system, and conversion strategy — taking Materia from stealth to market leader in under two years.

The background

Materia AI was founded in 2022 by Kevin Merlini and Lucas Adams. Both had previously worked together at Facebook, where they led product and engineering teams for news integrity and AI systems. Merlini started his career as an auditor at KPMG but left after four months, frustrated by the repetitive, low-value tasks that consume most of an auditor’s day. That experience became the seed for Materia.

The co-founders incubated the idea at the Allen Institute for AI in late 2022, months before ChatGPT launched publicly. Their thesis was simple: the accounting profession was critically underserved by technology, and recent advances in generative AI made it possible for the first time to automate workflows that relied on unstructured data and qualitative judgment, tasks that were previously impossible to touch with traditional automation.

The market reality backed them up. The U.S. was facing a worsening shortage of accounting professionals, 75% of CPAs set to retire within 15 years, new CPA candidates down 33%, and firms across the country struggling to retain talent in a profession weighed down by manual drudgery. By mid-2024, Materia emerged from stealth with $6.3 million in seed funding led by Spark Capital, with participation from Haystack Ventures, Thomson Reuters Ventures, Exponent Founders Capital, and the Allen Institute for AI. The platform was already live with five clients, including firms in the U.S. top 100.

The challenge

The challenge was to enhance Materia’s online presence and user engagement through a complete website overhaul. But the stakes went far beyond a redesign.

Materia was entering a market flooded with generic AI startups, all making similar promises. The accounting audience, firm partners, CTOs, and compliance leads, is inherently conservative and risk-averse. They don’t adopt new technology based on sleek marketing; they need to see SOC 2 compliance, authoritative content sources, and proven security before they’ll even book a demo. The product itself was technically complex: an AI assistant, a document analysis workspace, a centralized knowledge hub, and automated workflow integrations, four distinct capabilities that needed to be communicated clearly to non-technical buyers.

The website wasn’t just a brand exercise. It was Materia’s primary sales tool, the front door for every enterprise deal. It needed to establish instant credibility, explain the product without overwhelming, and convert high-intent visitors into qualified demo requests. All of this while the company was still in stealth, competing for attention against well-funded competitors with larger teams and louder marketing.

The solution

Keeways partnered with Materia’s founding team to build a digital experience that could carry a stealth-mode AI startup into enterprise sales, and beyond.

01

We began with brand positioning. Instead of leading with technology, we anchored Materia’s story in the pain of the profession: wasted hours, talent leaving the industry, and information locked in silos. Every headline and section was structured around a single question decision-makers care about, “How does this make my team’s life better?” This human-first narrative resonated with firm partners far more than feature specifications, and gave Materia a distinct voice in a market drowning in generic AI messaging.

02

The visual language we developed combines a sleek, dark-themed aesthetic with dynamic animations that mirror the product’s intelligence. Motion design was used deliberately, not decoratively, to show how queries flow into answers, how documents get analyzed, and how workflows connect. Every animation had a purpose: demonstrate the AI working and build confidence in the technology. The result felt premium and intentional, setting Materia apart from the flat, templated look of most AI SaaS sites.

03

We built the entire site in Webflow, optimizing for performance, scalability, and SEO. We implemented a comprehensive search strategy targeting high-intent accounting professionals actively looking for AI solutions. The site architecture followed the enterprise buyer journey: awareness-level content at the top, detailed product walkthroughs in the middle, and clear demo CTAs at every decision point. Security credentials, SOC 2 Type II compliance, data privacy commitments, and AI model training policies, were surfaced prominently, addressing the trust objections that typically stall enterprise sales in this industry.

04

On the conversion side, every page was designed to reduce friction between interest and action. We tested CTA placement, scroll-triggered engagement points, and content hierarchy to maximize demo requests. The approach treated the website not as a brochure but as a pipeline engine, built to qualify, educate, and convert in a single visit.

Results

The website we built didn’t just launch a brand, it became the engine behind Materia’s commercial traction. From stealth to funded, from funded to enterprise clients, and from clients to acquisition, every design and strategy decision compounded into measurable outcomes:

01

+171% increase in conversion

Within three months of launch, the new site nearly tripled Materia’s conversion rate, turning organic traffic into a qualified pipeline of enterprise demo requests.

02

5+ clients from U.S. top 100 firms

The digital presence gave Materia instant credibility with the most demanding buyers in accounting. Top-tier firms don’t take demos from unpolished startups, the brand we built opened the door.

03

$6.3M seed round raised

Emerging from stealth with a clear brand, a working conversion engine, and early enterprise traction, Materia closed a $6.3 million seed round led by Spark Capital with Thomson Reuters Ventures among the investors.

04

Acquired by Thomson Reuters

In October 2024, Thomson Reuters acquired Materia to accelerate its agentic AI vision. The technology now powers CoCounsel, serving over one million professionals across 107 countries. The brand we helped build was the first impression that started that conversation.
